PLAYER ELIGIBILITY
- Players must be of Greek Orthodox
descent/culture. A team can have Two "Philhellenes" players.
A "Philhellenes" is a player not of Greek Orthodox descent
that is close to the community. If
ever the rules change concerning # of “Philhellenes” or Greek
Orthodoxy, a “grandfather clause” will be issues to players that
participated in the league before the rule changes.
- All
players shall be at least 19 years of age and/ or out of high school. No
exceptions!!
- All
players must sign a waiver and release of liability form.
- No
player shall play on more than one team the same night/day unless
authorized by an official of the league.
- There
shall be a maximum of twelve (12) players on each team roster.
- The
team captain shall submit to the League before the first scheduled
game an official roster with all the players on his team. Changes,
additions, or deletions can be made prior to the FOURTH
scheduled game of the season. These changes must be called to Demetri
Papoulias at (240) 353-8072. It is the team's captain's responsibility
to make sure that all rosters and changes have been submitted.
- Each
team is allowed to have a substitute roster in case they will not be
able to come up with enough players in a certain week. These players
must be of Greek Orthodox descent/culture. These players are not
eligible for playoffs and must be called in to the League before games
are played on Sunday.
- A
player must participate in a minimum of four (4) league games to be
eligible to play in the playoffs. A player who has not participated in
the minimum number of games because of an injury shall be eligible to
play in the playoffs upon approval of the League Commissioner.
- Any
team using an ineligible player shall automatically forfeit all games
in which the ineligible player participated. If a team is expelled,
all games played and all scheduled games not played shall be forfeited
to the opponents. Ant player who participates under an assumed name
will automatically be suspended from all Greek Basketball League
activities for a period of one season from the date of the incident.
- Protests
regarding player eligibility must be submitted to Demetri Papoulias
(240) 353-8072, Michael Passas (301)754-0521 or any of the League
Board members. It will then be reviewed and dealt with ASAP.
- All
fees paid to the league are non-refundable!!
PLAYER RULES
- Unless
modified by these rules, all games of the League shall be played in
accordance with the current National High School Federation Basketball
rules (except for release on free throw).
- The
number of players to start a game shall be as follows: A game may
start with a minimum of 4 players. A team must start a game at the
scheduled starting time if the minimum numbers of players are present.
(NOTE: Once a team has met these requirements, a team may finish the
game with as few as 2 players providing said the team has a chance to
win the game.)
- Each
team shall be allowed 6 Team Fouls per Half before the
one-and-one rule shall apply. One-and-one takes effect on the 7th
team foul and continues until the 10th team foul at which
time two (2) shots will be taken on all common fouls.
- All
games shall consist of two 20-minute halves. There shall be a 5-minute
rest-period between the two halves. There will be four (4) one-minute
time-outs that can be used at ant point in the game. The clock will
stop on time-outs only, except during the final minute of the first
half and the final two minutes of the second half when it will be
stopped for all whistles.
- The
first 2 overtime periods shall be 3 minutes each. Stopped clock will
be in effect for the final minute of overtime. The third overtime will
be sudden death meaning the first team to score a point wins the game.
- Teams
are responsible for knowing the schedule and the time they are
supposed to be at the gym. It is recommended that a team show up 15
minutes prior to the game scheduled. A team must start the game at the
scheduled starting time if the minimum numbers of players are present.
The subsequent games that evening shall start at the scheduled
starting time or within 5 minutes after completion of the previous
game, whichever is later.
- The
team captain shall be the only person allowed to register complaints,
in a normal manner, to the referee concerning play of the game.
DISCIPLINARY
ACTION
- A
player, manager, coach, or spectator, who receives a technical by an
official and gets a second technical during that game, shall get
suspended from the game. They may get suspended for the next week’s
game or more based on the referee's suggestion to the management
committee. A player cannot appeal a suspension to the league.
- Any
player, manager, coach, or spectator who approaches an official in a
negative manner after the conclusion of a league game shall be
suspended for a minimum of one game based on the referee / management
committee judgment.
- Anyone
who makes physical contact with/or threatens an official shall be
suspended for at least one season from the date of the incident and
must apply for reinstatement with the management committee.
- Any
unsportsman-like conduct may result in barring the player(s) or the
team from further participation in the League.
- The
Greek League Board, the League Director, and the Commissioner shall
deal with all decisions regarding disciplinary action.
MISCELLANEOUS
- Inclement
Weather Policy: In case of inclement weather on the day of the game,
call the recorded message at (301)217-6799 and/or listen for
announcements on WTOP, WRC, WINX, and WMAL radio stations.
- No
Smoking or Drinking: Alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are not
allowed in Montgomery County Public School facilities. Teams reported,
as violating this policy will be dropped from the League. We must
maintain good with the schools or we may lose the use of them.
- Playoff
Tournament: All teams make the playoffs for the last three weeks of
the season. Seeding will be based on W-L record. In case of ties, the
tiebreaker procedure will be as follows:

As
soon as one or more teams are eliminated at any step, then begin process
again from step 1 of either A (two teams remain tied) or B (more than two
teams tied).
